Notes for Nicholas PRATER
The Following notes by Gary Benton Prather :
Nicholas inherited a small manor named "Hook", which was located in the Manor of Lydiard Tregoz, Wiltshire. (Held by the St. John Family). Nicholas's brother, Anthony took him into his care. Anthony claimed he was in fear of his death due to poor health. Anthony placed a claim on "Hook" and received it as his property to offset the expense of caring for his brother Nicholas. In the court records Anthony claimed his brother to be a lunatic.
"Hook" was located in the Manor of Lydiard, Tregoz which was held by the St. John Family. The St. Johns were related to the Praters in several ways. The Paulets that owned Nunney Castle had the Title of Lord St. John which they received in marriage. The Paulets were married in to the Delamare family, Kingston family and St. John family. The Praters were married into the same families. Also the Praters maternal ancestor was a Carew, the St. Johns were also descended from the Carews. (Carew Castle of central Wales, built in 1109).
When Anthony's wife died Nicholas went to live with his sister in London, where he "regained " his former health. He brought claim against his brother for his property (Hook), but the court found in favor of Anthony. Later Nicholas stole 18 cows from his brother Anthony for payment of his property. Nothing is recorded as to the outcome of this act.
The Church at Lydiard, Tregoz, contains the tombs of many relatives of the Praters. A painting of the St. John family (dated 1610) can be found in the church as well as many effigy statues. The House still has furnishings. An assoc. has been formed to protect the artifacts at the Manor House and Church at Lydiard Tregoz. This Association is called "The Friends of Lydiard Tregoz". They meet yearly to discuss the condition and history of the Manor. Also to manage and budget for the continuing preservation of the estate. Gary Benton Prather is a family historian and is a member of the Association of "The Friends of Lydiard Treogz".
