Notes for John TANDY


Gallatin co KY Will Book AJohn Tandy, son of William, was born in Caroline County, VA 9 Dec 1751 (1). First wife was Judith Martin, second wife --- Rowland (2). 11 March 1778, he bought 100 acres of land in Albemarle Co. from Alexander Henderson (1) and 10 May 1780 sold that tract to John Moore (1). 20 Nov 1778 he bought 498 acres in Albemarle county from Thomas Wherry (1) and 1 Augt 1784 sold that tract to William Tandy Jr (1). In 1779 he and his father took the oath of allegiance to the Commonwealth of Virginia (2) (1). He was living Fayette county Kentucky in 1787 along with his father and brother Achilles (3). John appears in the Fayette County KY Tax lists from 1787-1796 (12). He was still in Fayette county Kentucky in 1790 (4). 9 Dec 1797 John and Mary Tandy sold some land in Fayette Co. left to him in his father's will to Moses Tandy (11). John was in Gallatin county by 1799 when he was listed on the tax list for Gallatin Co. along with sons William and John Jr (10). He was in Gallatin co still 1800 when that census was taken (5) and their again in 1810 (6). 9 Sept 1801, John bought his 250 acres of land at White's Run from John Mays (9). 28 Jan 1802 he and his eldest son John Tandy, granted power of attorney to John's younger son William Tandy to go to Virginia to represent the interests in the estate of Henry Martin of John Tandy's children that were the grandchildren of Henry Martin (8)(15-p170). 9 Dec 1809 John Tandy and others reviewed a road near the Ohio River (13). 9 Sept 1811 he and Samuel Sanders were made joint administrators of the estate of Rice Bledsoe (7-p190)(13). Nov 1811, John received $1.50 for having killed a "woolf" over six months old (13). 9 Dec 1811 he was a joint admin for the estate of William Edmington and also served as guardian for the infant son Robert (7-p193). Late 1811 and early 1812 John Tandy and Nathaniel Sanders built a jail for Gallatin co KY (13). 30 Oct 1812, he attended the estate sale of Joseph Bledsoe and bought a number of items, including a field of corn for $42. 00 (7-p265). 19 Jan 1813 John sold 104 acres at White's Run to his son John Jr (8)(16-p101) . He also attended the estate sale of John Remy 2 July 1815 and bought some items; his son Roger also attended (7-p327). He made his will probably in late 1816 and says he was impressed with a sense of his impending departure from life (7-p400). He left his crop and fattening hogs for the use of his beloved wife Polly and was mindful that the equal distribution of his estate among his lawful heirs did not deprive her of her thirds (7-p400). He appointed his sons Roger M. Tandy and Moses Tandy as his executors and was deceased by 13 Jan 1817 (7-p400 )(14). 10 Jan 1817 his last will and testament was proven in court (14). Inventory on his estate was done 28 Jan 1817 and it revealed a sizeable estate totaling $3084.70 (7-p403). Most of his family and some of the Sheltons attended the estate sale in July 1817 (7).

The statement on page 101 of Vol XIV No 1 July 1909 of the Magazine which says "Thomas Mallory, 6th son of Sir John Mallory of Studley (see this Mage XIII p 442), was born about 1566" should read "Thomas Mallory a younger son of Sir William Mallory of Studley was born about 1566"
