Notes for Mary TANDY

Mary was born in Ky in 1790, listed as aged 60 in the 1850 census where she was living with Alexander Caldwell and her daughter Maria Shelton Caldwell (3). 26 May 1810, Jacob married Polly (Mary) Tandy, daughter of John P. Tandy in Gallatin County KY, by Henry Ogbourn (1). Her father died in Jan 1817 (5-p400). It is not recorded in the probate records that Mary attended the estate sale of her father's estate in July 1817, but since Jacob Shelton did attend (5) , it is reasonable to assume that she may have accompanied him. 25 Feb 1833 she and Jacob sold 42 acres of land on White's Run to William Spicer (6). She and Jacob left Gallatin co in 1835 and settled for a while in Hancock go Illinois (according to obituaries of their children though the names of the parents are not mentioned). In 1840 Mary is head of household in Henry co IA, with this enumeration : 3m 20-30, 1m 40-50, 2f 5-10, 1f 10-15, 1f 15-20, 1f50- 60 (8).
After Thomas Shelton died in his estate in July 1842, in the September term of the probate court Mary appeared to petition to be administrator of Thomas's estate(2). T.B. Brown and Wesley Tandy appeared on her behalf(2). Her petition was granted by the court 28 September 1842 when she posted bond and was given the oath (2). The letters of administration were issued that same day (2). Tarleton Brown (her son in law) and Wesley Tandy (her brother) were also appointed to administrator (2). The inventory of Thomas's estate was presented 28 Sept 1842 (2). Mary's relationship to Thomas is never stated in the probate records, but she is never said to be his widow and in 1840, two years before Thomas died, Mary is the head of household which if she was the wife of Thomas would not be the case. This indicates that Thomas was a son or some other relative, but not a spouse. The Appraisement Bill for the estate was signed 30 Sept 1842 (2). In 1850, Mary was living in Fairfield, Jefferson co with the Caldwells (9). Mary is still in Jefferson county in the 1854 census (10). In the 1856 Mahaska co census records she was living with Matthew Waters and her daughter Lucy A Shelton Waters (11). In 1860 the Waters and Mary Shelton who was still living with them are now living in Decatur Twp, Decatur co (7). Date of her death is not recorded. In the 1880 Iowa Census, Medley T. Shelton listed his father as born in Virginia and his mother born in Kentucky (4).
